 Dear SHSM Class:

I am sorry I will be away this week for a family emergency due to the death of my father in law.  There are lessons and assignments left for you to complete this week.  Please ensure any assignments left for the class and or the gym are completed and handed in.  These assignments will be counted.

Friday's stress assignment must be handed in on the D2L site.  Recall the username is the same as you would use to log on and the password is blended. Again, if you need to contact me with questions please do so.  

I will be back on Monday where our class will be part of a GFO "Get Fit Outside" project.  Mr. Teufel will be giving you details this week. Monday will also be a double PE period..I am sure that will be fun!

SHSM Training and Certifications this week. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY

This week you will be Certified by the Canadian Red Cross in Standard First Aid, CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator)



An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient,[1] and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Finally some signs of Spring..it is starting to warm up so we will be able to get outside.

This week we will be finishing up our unit on the Social Determinants of Health.  We will be engaging in playing the The Last Straw game that we borrowed through Hamilton Public Health and discussing some of our results.

We will also be viewing "Supersize Me" to gain a better understanding on the impact of fast food eating on our overall mental and physical health.

In the gym, we will be doing Fitness Testing.  Mid term marks and results are slowly creeping up so make sure you are continuing to fully participate in all activities in the gym and classroom.

Some Reminders:

Your Alternative Medicine and Practices assignments are due.  Please email them to me asap.  If you are having problems doing this please see me.

THURSDAY APRIL 11, 2013 is the Ontario Literacy Test.  Please note the modified schedule for the afternoon or visit http://schools.hwdsb.on.ca/sherwood/   for more information.

CPR/ Standard First Aid training will take place April 17-23. Training will be all afternoon.  At the completion of the training you will be certified in Standard First Aid, CPR, AED, and Infection Control..WOW!  Great for resumes, part time jobs and college or university.

This week we will continue to investigate Cultural Beliefs on Health.  Your powerpoints will be due Friday.

We will also be looking at some of the Social Determinants of Health and working with Public Health in understanding the impact of social economic status on overall Health in the Hamilton Community.

In the gym, we will be starting to experiment with heart rate monitors and practice monitoring Heart Rate with the Polar watches.

This week our area of focus will be on Cultural Beliefs and Health.
We will be studying our different cultures value and emphasize health practices.  This unit will also lead into Holistic approaches to health with an assignment on Wednesday in the computer lab.

Thursday we will be at 5 Star
Remember your water, towel, lock and positive attitude.


We are in Gym A this week, and weight room on Tuesday. We will continue to work on building our fitness. We will also be participating in a plyometric program.

Friendly reminder ..Make sure all assignments are upto date and submitted.

March 18-22

Welcome Back from March Break!!!

This week we will be completing the Glogsters, see the previous post for instructions.

The focus this week will be on the Organic Industry and whether they are worth the price. Details of our trip to Goodness Me will be presented this week.

We will be in all the gyms this week, working on establishing Target Heart Rate.  We will also be using the Polar Watches to help monitor heart rate and record our findings.

Reminder: CLA day is March 19, 2013, for students who still need to complete one more CLA before Graduation.  This is extremely important for graduating students in order to help fulfill requirements.

This week we will be looking at the Organic Industry.  In particular we will be viewing the documentary FOOD INC. and discussing the billion dollar food industry.   As well as the impact of organic food consumption on overall health.

Happy Family Day!!

This week we will be focusing on the FITT principle and it's importance of fitness and training.  Wednesday Brian will be running a circuit training session. Be sure to bring water and a towel.

Our fitness class will be held in Gym A.  We will be focusing on circuits and how
 they can effectively supplement your training.  Recall , you must continue to challenge your body, muscles have memory and will adapt quickly so it's important to change it up.

Attention SHSM Students

This week we will be determining our One Repetition Max on several machines.  Using this information we will be determining our Strength to Body Ratios.  Furthermore, this will give you a starting point for determining which weights you should be using that are appropriate to your goals.

In Health for Life we will be starting an assignment on determining what TOTAL FITNESS means to you.
