As we continue to look at the issues surrounding Health Care and Wellness we will be further considering the  Determinants of Health.  This will lead into our Mental Health and Stress Unit.

SHSM Training and Certifications this week. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY

This week you will be Certified by the Canadian Red Cross in Standard First Aid, CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator)



An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient,[1] and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Finally some signs of Spring..it is starting to warm up so we will be able to get outside.

This week we will be finishing up our unit on the Social Determinants of Health.  We will be engaging in playing the The Last Straw game that we borrowed through Hamilton Public Health and discussing some of our results.

We will also be viewing "Supersize Me" to gain a better understanding on the impact of fast food eating on our overall mental and physical health.

In the gym, we will be doing Fitness Testing.  Mid term marks and results are slowly creeping up so make sure you are continuing to fully participate in all activities in the gym and classroom.

Some Reminders:

Your Alternative Medicine and Practices assignments are due.  Please email them to me asap.  If you are having problems doing this please see me.

THURSDAY APRIL 11, 2013 is the Ontario Literacy Test.  Please note the modified schedule for the afternoon or visit http://schools.hwdsb.on.ca/sherwood/   for more information.

CPR/ Standard First Aid training will take place April 17-23. Training will be all afternoon.  At the completion of the training you will be certified in Standard First Aid, CPR, AED, and Infection Control..WOW!  Great for resumes, part time jobs and college or university.

This week we will continue to investigate Cultural Beliefs on Health.  Your powerpoints will be due Friday.

We will also be looking at some of the Social Determinants of Health and working with Public Health in understanding the impact of social economic status on overall Health in the Hamilton Community.

In the gym, we will be starting to experiment with heart rate monitors and practice monitoring Heart Rate with the Polar watches.
